Mycotoxins rising in feed across North America, Alltech finds

Elevated levels of the mycotoxins deoxynivalenol (DON) and T-2/HT-2 are being detected more frequently in feed for all species across the US, with DON found in more than 40% of Canadian grain samples, according to insights shared during Alltech’s 2025 Global Harvest Broadcast.

The findings were presented January 15 during Alltech’s live, on-demand program, From Field to Feed: 2025 Crop and Mycotoxin Analysis, streamed from the company’s headquarters in Lexington, Kentucky. Experts said shifting climate patterns are contributing to increased and more complex mycotoxin risks throughout the feed supply chain.

Meteorologist Dr Jan Dutton, CEO of CropProphet, said long-term weather data show warming temperatures have extended growing seasons in much of the US Midwest by up to two weeks over the past 40 years, while rainfall is occurring in fewer but more intense events. “Those conditions increase excess moisture and create an environment where mycotoxins thrive,” she said.

Alltech research group director Dr Alexandros Yiannikouris noted that the convergence of changing weather, variable crop quality and emerging mycotoxins is increasing risk. “This reinforces the importance of using data, advanced analytics and predictive tools to anticipate challenges and support informed decision-making across the feed supply chain,” he said.

Alltech also highlighted progress in predictive modeling using larger datasets and artificial intelligence to better forecast mycotoxin risk.
