Egypt is projected to import 13 million tonnes of wheat in the 2025-26 marketing year, the same volume as in 2024-25, according to a report from the US Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS). The forecast is driven by improved access to foreign currency, allowing private companies to purchase more milling wheat, and an increase in wheat flour exports.
Domestic wheat production in Egypt for 2025-26 is expected to grow by 1% year-on-year, reaching 9.3 million tonnes. This increase is attributed to a rise in harvested area, which is expected to reach 1.43 million hectares, up from 1.4 million hectares in the previous year. Higher procurement prices are encouraging farmers to expand wheat cultivation.
Total wheat consumption in Egypt for 2025-26 is forecast to reach 20.4 million tonnes, a nearly 1.5% increase from the previous year, primarily due to a rise in food, seed, and industrial consumption. The increase is linked to population growth, with Egypt’s population expected to reach 124 million by 2030.
The main suppliers of wheat to Egypt over the past five marketing years have been Russia, Ukraine, and the European Union. Wheat flour exports for 2025-26 are projected to rise by 20% to 1.7 million tonnes, driven by increased demand from African and Middle Eastern countries.
Additionally, Egypt’s corn production in 2025-26 is expected to rise by 3.6% to 7.25 million tonnes, driven by an increase in harvested area and higher demand from the poultry sector. Egypt is forecast to import 8.7 million tonnes of corn to meet domestic needs, a slight increase from the previous year.
