Updated PEFCR feed for food-producing animals published

The updated Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules (PEFCR) for Feed for Food-Producing Animals were published on the FEFAC website this month. The update, mainly technical, did not significantly change the methodology for calculating the environmental footprint of compound feed. The updated PEFCR Feed, valid until at least December 2026, will also be available on the European Commission’s Environmental Footprint Methods webpage. FEFAC has begun identifying potential improvements and welcomes expert suggestions.

FEFAC President Pedro Cordero emphasized that the update, while formal, is crucial for enhancing the environmental performance of compound feed production. Cordero also highlighted the Green Feed Labelling Code and GFLI Database as key initiatives in this effort. FEFAC thanked participants in the PEFCR Feed Technical Secretariat, review panel, and consultants from Mérieux NutriScience | Blonk for their contributions.

FEFAC is also preparing to release the PEFCR Marine Fish, with work already done on this category. Along with PEFCR Dairy, these categories now have endorsed environmental footprinting methodologies from the European Community.

The European compound feed industry employs over 100,000 people at 3,500 production sites, supplying 20% of the 830 million tonnes of feed consumed annually by EU farm animals, contributing to a €55 billion turnover. FEFAC represents 21 national associations in the EU and associate members in the UK, Switzerland, Turkey, and Norway. For more information, visit FEFAC’s website.
