DSM-Firmenich has released the results of its World Mycotoxin Survey for January to December 2024, revealing increased contamination levels of mycotoxins in global animal feed. The survey, which analysed 28,388 feed samples from 95 countries, found that all six major mycotoxins—aflatoxin, zearalenone, vomitoxin, fumonisins, T-2 mycotoxin, and ochratoxin A—had higher prevalence compared to 2023.
The survey showed a notable rise in mycotoxin risk in Central Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. However, the highest levels were observed in North and Central America, South Asia, China, and Taiwan. These regions experienced extreme mycotoxin risks that threaten feed quality and animal performance.
Each year since 2004, dsm-firmenich has tracked mycotoxin contamination in feed ingredients, providing valuable insights on risks to various animal species and regions. The company emphasises the importance of frequent testing and a multi-strategy approach to mycotoxin risk management.
The 2024 survey also includes details on trends over the years, regional prevalence, and species-specific risks. It highlights emerging mycotoxins and new testing methods, such as Spectrum 380 and Spectrum Top 50, for more comprehensive mycotoxin detection.
Ursula Hofstetter, Head of Mycotoxin Risk Management at dsm-firmenich, stressed the importance of effective mycotoxin management strategies to protect animal welfare, productivity, and agricultural sustainability. She noted that these strategies are essential for the profitability and safety of both the feed industry and animal protein sectors.
