Acadian Sea Beyond is celebrating its 45th anniversary as the world’s largest independent company dedicated to the harvesting, cultivation and extraction of Ascophyllum nodosum seaweed for agricultural biostimulant applications.
Founded in Canada in 1981, the company now operates in more than 80 countries, including Brazil, with a global workforce of nearly 400 employees. It is a leader in developing sustainable biological solutions for agriculture.
“Acadian’s 45-year history reflects the company’s stability and the consistency of a track record built on science, innovation and the sustainable use of natural resources,” said Daniel Forlivio, Commercial Vice President for Latin America.
Reorganisation in Latin America
The company has reorganised its regional operations, unifying management and expanding strategic coordination across 13 countries – from Mexico to Argentina. Operations are now structured into three business units: two in South America (Pacific and Atlantic) and a third dedicated to Mexico and Central America.
The reorganisation aims to increase operational efficiency, accelerate growth and strengthen the company’s presence in the Latin American plant biostimulant market, valued at an estimated US$1.2 billion annually.
Market context
Seaweed-based solutions already account for approximately 30 percent of the biostimulant market in Brazil, the region’s largest market. With annual growth rates exceeding 10 percent through 2031, the segment represents a strategic opportunity with significant expansion potential.
Science-based approach
The company distinguishes itself through a commitment to scientific innovation, developing proprietary solutions using Ascophyllum nodosum – a seaweed species found in the cold waters of the North Atlantic off the coast of Canada. Rich in bioactive compounds, the raw material, when subjected to appropriate extraction processes, yields substances that stimulate plant development, increase tolerance to environmental stress and contribute to soil health.
“Celebrating 45 years means recognising a track record of leadership and innovation in biosolutions while reaffirming our commitment to continuing the development of technologies for more productive and sustainable agriculture,” said Gustavo Gonella, Marketing Director at Acadian Sea Beyond.
