According to preliminary data, Russia's agricultural economy improved in 2020. Positive results continue in crop and livestock production. In the first 11 months of the year, the agricultural production index reached 101.5 percent, the food industry index reached 103.9 percent, and the beverage production index reached 101.3 percent.
'Overall, the volume of agricultural production is expected to increase by more than two percent by the end of the year. According to preliminary data, Russia had one of the largest grain harvests with a net weight of 133 million tons in 2020. Meanwhile, the gross wheat harvest was 85.9 million tons. It ensures the full grain needs of the domestic market, including the supply of processing facilities and livestock farms, and further development of agriculture,' comments Russian Agriculture Minister Dmitry Patrushev.
The data also show that the oilseed harvest will exceed 21 million tons. The sunflower harvest for 2020 was 13.3 million tons, above the long-term average. Rapeseed production of 2.6 million tons was also a record. Soybean harvest amounted to approximately 4.3 million tons as in the previous year.
There are also positive data on animal husbandry. In 2020, it is estimated that livestock and poultry production (live weight) for slaughter will reach 15.6 million tons with an increase of 3.2 percent compared to 2019. In particular, cattle production increased by 0.2 percent to 2.8 million tons.
Poultry production increased by 0.4 percent to 6.7 million tons. Milk production is expected to increase 2.5 percent to 32.1 million tons, and eggs 0.4 percent to 45.1 billion tons. The development of the agricultural sector is supported by improved government support measures, technical and technological modernisation, the development of its scientific potential, and the increasing demand for agricultural products and foodstuffs. This year's agricultural sector performance enables the domestic market needs for basic foodstuffs to be met and domestic food security in key areas.
